How To Check If Your Mac Can Run A Game

Knowing whether your PC can actually run a game before going out and buying said game (or getting it from an online store, like Origin) is absolutely essential. I mean, you wouldn’t want to spend money on something you can’t use, would you?

Well, there is a solution that can assure this won’t happen.

Recall that you can pair gaming controllers to the Mac easily, so if you have a Playstation 3 controller or a PS4 controller laying around, you can use those to game with your Mac and Fortnite. Fortnite System Requirements for Mac. Like most video games, Fortnite runs best on better hardware.

Of course, you can always use something like Speccy to look at your system information in full detail, then search online for the game’s minimum system requirements. After that, you can compare the two, but this all takes time and it’s not the most pleasant thing to do.

What if there were a way for you to just pick a game from a list, scan your computer specs automatically and get the answer, all in very little time? That sounds more like it, doesn’t it?

Well, know that such a method actually exists; it’s called Can You Run It. Let’s see how it works.

Can you play 32 bit games on 64 bit mac. Screenshot by Dami Lee / The VergeAdobe recommends you not update your Mac if you rely on this older, pre-Creative Cloud version of Photoshop or Lightroom. It also says that, even if you do upgrade, you should probably uninstall that software first or else it will be difficult to get rid of once its rendered inoperable.Other popular pieces of software ensnared by this 32- to 64-bit transition include older versions of Microsoft Office, numerous legacy versions of Mac apps like GarageBand, and discontinued apps like iPhoto.

Can You Run It?

Can You Run It is the easiest way to see whether a game will run on your PC and what’s even better is that its database is constantly updated with the newest titles the industry releases. That way, you can always know if that new game in the FIFA series will run on your PC before splashing money on it.

Start by going to the Can You Run It website. Not a lot is necessary for you to be able to use it; it only takes a browser – Internet Explorer, Chrome or Firefox, the permission to install an Active X/Java browser component (but it can do without that, too, or uninstall it after the analysis). The service won’t collect any identifiable information about you from your computer.

Now, search for the game you want or pick it from the list (that will take you a while, since the list is quite extensive).

Then, click the Can You Run It button.

You will be presented with a list of options. The first and easiest one is to run the automatic detection using Java. Since Java isn’t the safest thing around (we’ve even suggested removing Java altogether), the second option, which involves installing a little desktop app, is the one I would use.

The third option is to take a look at the system requirements, so you can compare them with what your computer has inside it. But that pretty much defeats the purpose of the whole thing…

So install the Desktop app. It’s very small and takes seconds to install. It is also completely safe – I’ve scanned it with VirusTotal, just to make sure.

Once the installation is done, let the software run the detection process.

Your browser will show a success message when the process is done (it takes seconds). Click Continue to find out the complete story.

You’ll get a simple analysis, telling you if you can run the game or not. As you can see, I can’t run FIFA 15.

You also won’t be left in the dark as to the reasons why you can or can’t run a specific game. Just scroll down and you’ll get all the details, as well as upgrade suggestions. These come both for the recommended and minimum specifications of the game.

After you’ve run the analysis, you can click around the site and see which games you can run and which you can’t. You don’t need to run it multiple times for different games.

How To Check If Your Mac Can Run A GameCool Tip: The right side of the Can You Run It website allows you to run the analysis for a group of games at the same time. For example, you can test whether you will be able to run New Releases and Upcoming Games.

Can You Run It is a very simple way of avoiding disappointment after buying a game that won’t run on your PC.

All Mac® users know about the Mac App Store®, and most have probably used it to get an app or two. If you’re also a Parallels Desktop® for Mac user, there’s another store you should check out: the Microsoft Store.

The Microsoft Store is accessible from Windows 8 or 10—but in all practical terms, this means onlvidy Windows 10, since Windows 8 is used so rarely these days.

The Microsoft Store is for all things to play or consume on Windows 10: movies, music, apps, books, fonts, extensions to the Edge browser, and even hardware. In Apple® terms, it’s iTunes®, the Mac App Store, iBooks®, and the Apple Store® all rolled into one. However, in this blog post, I will focus mainly on apps available from the Microsoft Store.

Accessing the Store

Just as Apple has the App Store app, Microsoft has the Microsoft Store app. (See Figure 1.)

Here are some apps I have downloaded from the Microsoft Store, none of which are available on the Mac App Store:

Age of Empires: Castle SiegeMicrosoft WhiteboardKakitai: Learn Japanese by WritingNebo*
Crossy Road*Office 365 Home*Sensavis Visual Learning ToolPlumbago
Microsoft MahjongSway*Penbook
Age of Empires: Definitive EditionDelve*GestureSign
Age of SpartaMicrosoft MathMicrosoft Font Maker
Translator*
Fluid Math

*Available for the iPhone®/iPad® in the Apple App Store.

All of these apps run fine for me on my MacBook Pro® in a Windows 10 VM using Parallels Desktop 14—with the single exception of Age of Empires: Definitive Edition. I used every setting I know to get this app to run with acceptable performance, but in the end, I gave up. (Age of Empires is my favorite game of all time, as I posted back in 2014.)

You can predict whether an app in the Microsoft Store will run in Parallels Desktop by looking at its system requirements from within your virtual machine. (See Figure 2.)

Figures 3–5 show some other apps from the Microsoft Store running in Parallels Desktop on my MacBook Pro.

Video 1 shows some games from the Microsoft Store running in Parallels Desktop 14 on my MacBook Pro:

And Video 2 shows some of the 3D models available for the Sensavis Visual Learning Tool:

As of today, there are about 800,000 Windows 10 apps in the Microsoft Store, as opposed to only about 11,000 in the Mac App Store. There are a number of excellent apps in both stores, and the Mac user with Parallels Desktop can take advantage of both to find the perfect app for your needs.
